Summer Adviser Workshops

Days are split between morning advising sessions and afternoon technology sessions.

We pride ourselves on addressing any topic at any level that our workshop participants need. Please let us know what topics are important to you!

ADVISING TOPICS

BEGINNING TO ADVANCED ADVISING FOR THE NEWSPAPER: The ins and outs and the ups and downs of advising the newspaper. Emphasis is on staff organization, working with administrators, faculty and printers. Additional focus includes budgeting, press law (including up to date information for Oregon advisers on the new student press law!) , teaching writing and basic design principles. Critiquing of publications available as well.

BEGINNING ADVISING-Yearbook: The ins and outs and the ups and downs of advising the yearbook. Emphasis is on staff organization, working with administrators, faculty and printers. Additional focus includes budgeting, press law, teaching writing and basic design principles. Critiquing of publications available as well.

ADVANCED ADVISING-Newspaper and Yearbook: For those who have been advising and want to add to that bag of tricks needed for successful advising. Class built on needs of those attending and the sharing of what works among those who have been advising for a few years. Critiquing of publications available as well.

TECHNOLOGY TOPICS

INTRODUCTION TO InDESIGN: Learn to use this application that has replaced PageMaker. This project-based class will also introduce how to use all aspects of the program and how to make a smooth transition from PageMaker. Classes are taught on Macs but information can be easily adapted to a PC classroom back home.

PHOTOSHOP AND DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: Learn to use this application to enhance your publications and help you teach your students these programs. This session will include how to improve and edit photos and how to use Photoshop to create graphics for your publications. Classes taught on Macs.

PUBLICATION DESIGN: If you already have basic InDesign skills maybe it's time to give your publications a fresh look. This session builds upon the essentials of theme development, page layout, design trends, typography and photo use, while keeping an eye on the publications horizon. Improve your grasp of InDesign and Photoshop to zap added life to your publications. Classes taught on Macs.

Please Note: Workshop sessions must have a minimum of 5 registrations for the workshop to be held. In case some have less, you will be notified of alternative workshops that are available.

Students are encouraged to develop design
projects that they will be able to use
in their classrooms in the fall.

Beginning Newspaper Advising

Advising sessions help new and seasoned newspaper and yearbook advisers gain the skills needed to succeed with their staffs. Students and staff work together to help participants gain skills, problem solve

Publication Design

Computer classes are taught in Mac labs. Those who are more comfortable with PCs are encouraged to bring their own machines.
