Retired Oregon publications advisers Nancy Giuliani and Bill Flechtner were both awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Journalism Education Association. Flechtner received his award at the Fall national convention in St. Louis and Giuliani received her award at the Spring convention in Phoenix.

Flechtner spent the majority of his teaching career at Milwaukie High School, advising both the yearbook and newspaper. Both The Milwaukian newspaper and The Maroon yearbook won numerous awards during his tenure. Flechtner also is a past president of OJEA and was the director of the Summer Adviser Workshops until 2006. Since his retirement from secondary school teaching, Flechtner has taught at Warner Pacific College in southeast Portland. He is currently the Education Department chairperson there. Flechtner has also stayed active in OJEA, serving as one of the inaugural mentors in the JEA adviser mentor program.

Giuliani retired from Newport High School at the end of the 2007 school year. She also advised both publications there. Giuliani has been a frequent presenter at both Oregon State University's Fall Press Day and the annual National JEA/NSPA High School Journalism conventions. Her presentations are well-known for her humorous anecdotes. Giuliani also served as Oregon's JEA State Director for over 20 years. She is still active in OJEA, serving on the organizing committe for the upcoming 2010 convention which will be held in Portland.

Congratulations to both Bill and Nancy on their much-deserved awards. They join other Oregon recipients of the award Carla Harris (2005), Jan Watt (2002) and Sue Barr (2001).
